MINIMALLY INVASIVE HYSTERECTOMY
MINIMALLY INVASIVE HYSTERECTOMY
We are proud to announce that all of the doctors at Newport Beach OB/GYN Medical Group have been fully trained and certified to perform a rather new procedure called “minimally invasive hysterectomy” or “laparoscopic hysterectomy”. This can either be a total hysterectomy, in which the uterus and cervix are removed at the time of surgery through very small incisions in the abdomen, or a partial hysterectomy in which the cervix is retained, but the rest of the uterus is removed, also through very small incisions in the abdominal cavity.
The advantage of these surgeries is that they are done with minimal trauma to the abdominal wall, there is not a large incision and the patient is only in the hospital for a half day to a full day, usually staying just one night. The recovery is much quicker than the traditional abdominal hysterectomy, with patients feeling quite good at one or two weeks after surgery, and usually returning to normal activity in two or three weeks, rather than the traditional six weeks of recovery.
We have brochures in the office and will be happy to answer any questions if you are a candidate for a hysterectomy, whether it be due to fibroids, abnormal bleeding, cysts or other reasons.
The decision whether or not to remove your ovaries at the time of the hysterectomy has nothing to do with the method of surgery and should be discussed on an individual basis with your physician.
The physicians in our medical group are continually learning new techniques and applying minimally invasive techniques to traditional surgery in order to help our patients get through surgery quicker and heal quicker as well.
We would be happy to discuss any procedures with you at your next office appointment.
